Building a new gaming desktop or upgrading your motherboard is exciting, but what happens to your existing Windows license? If you own a genuine Retail copy of Windows 10 or Windows 11, Microsoft permits you to transfer that license to your new machine without paying for a new operating system.
Step 1: Verify Your License Transfer Eligibility
Before beginning, confirm that your current key is a Retail license rather than an OEM copy:
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
- Run
slmgr.vbs /dli. - Check the Description line. If it says
RETAIL channel, you are 100% eligible for transfer. If it saysOEM channel, the license is legally locked to your original motherboard.
Step 2: Uninstall the Product Key from the Old Computer
To avoid activation conflicts on Microsoft's validation servers, remove the license key from your old PC:
- On the old computer, open Command Prompt as Administrator.
- Deactivate and uninstall the key by typing:
slmgr.vbs /upk - Clear the product key from the Windows registry cache:
slmgr.vbs /cpky - Your old PC will revert to an unactivated state.
Step 3: Activate Your New PC with Your Existing Key
- Boot into your new PC with Windows 11 installed.
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Click Change product key and enter your original 25-digit key.
- Click Next and then Activate.
Troubleshooting: "Unable to Activate Windows (Error 0xC004C008)"
If Microsoft's automated system flags the key because it was recently active on other hardware, don't panic. Simply trigger the automated telephone verification:
- Press Win + R, type
slui 4, and press Enter. - Select your country and generate an Installation ID.
- Use the WindowsKey Confirmation ID Tool or dial Microsoft's automated phone number.
- When asked how many computers the key is installed on, answer "1".
- Enter the 8-block Confirmation ID to complete permanent activation.
